Ever wanted to draw pixel art space ships but don't know where to start? You didn't? Oh, okay, then maybe you need some space ships for your game. Unless you want some amazing looking space ships in your game (which only a professional can draw), or you need a bunch of space ships yesterday, I see no reason why you should buy PIXEL ART space ships. Like, seriously, you can draw these yourself with some time and effort.

I'm going to teach you how to draw your own pixel art space ship. Nothing fancy, but it will do the job. Here's what you'll need:

  • any software that has some kind of symmetry function in it (the picture is split in half, and what you draw on the left will be mirrored to the right);
  • any software that has a pencil brush (because we're doing pixel art and we don't need any anti-aliasing);
  • one day when you're not busy to study this tutorial and practice.

That's it! Ready to make your first ship? Let's go!

Note: This is NOT a video tutorial; just some pictures put together that explain my process of creating these type of ships.

PS. Oh, and in case you're thinking, "But I have no talent, I can't do this! I'm just a programmer." All I have to say to that is: Stop it. You can do anything you put your mind to. Stop limiting yourself. There's growth in being uncomfortable.

Well, I just spent the afternoon looking through your slides and gave it a go with maybe  my favorite design from the 'Trek universe, and I'm honestly pretty happy with the result. The proportions aren't quite perfect, but I'd say its a pretty good representation. Maybe a little excessive on the highlighting. I stopped reading your slides about half-way through as my imagination started taking over, but this tutorial definitely got me started off right.

Hey Kananesgi. Thank you for your honest review, I appreciate it. I'm happy to hear you didn't even need to watch all the presentation. The ship looks good, it's definitely something I would use. Anyways, I wish you good luck with your projects and keep practicing, since that's the only way to perfection. :)

I stopped the slides partly because I have some background in image editing already. I've just never done pixel art before, and was feeling a bit overwhelmed on where to start. I'm also not an artist. I can manipulate images and do what some people call amazing things with them, but when it comes to drawing something from scratch, I'm barely above the finger-painting skill level.

Don't tell anyone, but I don't consider myself a pixel artist either. It's all trial and error; see what I can achieve by keep being stubborn, LOL.

Looks very cool. Is it a Bird of Prey?

Romulan Warbird from ST:TNG era. BoP has been done to death, IMO.
